Indonesia’s figures are still far from the peak of India 400,000 cases everyday in May. India, with a population of approximately five times the size of 270 million Indonesians, seeing daily infections fell below 33,000 on Tuesday because of its awesome outbreak.
Indonesia reported 907 daily deaths on average in the last seven days – compared to only 181 a month ago – while India reported an average of 1,072 deaths everyday.
Developing countries are struggling to contain viruses – especially fast distribution of deltas – even when the vaccine launch allows life to return to normal countries such as the US and U.K.
The outbreak in Indonesia underlines the consequences of uneven distribution of global vaccines that have seen richer countries experience more than supply, leaving poor places exposed to variants such as Delta. The Director General of World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said increasingly dividing “disaster moral failure.”
Indonesia has provided a vaccine to close only 10% of the population and 14% of India, compared to 46% of the European Union population and 52% in U.S., according to Bloomberg vaccine trackers. The lack of sufficient immunization, the developing world presents the burden of the increasing number of cases and deaths, with global death reaching 4 million earlier this month.
The positive test rate of Covid Indonesia has reached around 27%, while the Indian level is 2%. Larger numbers show the government only tested the most painful patients, and that there was a level of infection that was not detected in the community. Experts say the two nations are counting cases and death by wide margins considering the lack of their testing infrastructure.

The residents’ mobility only fell 6% to 16% because restrictions were enacted, while the authorities expected a 20% decline, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in hearing with parliamentarians on Tuesday. “Our hospital can not stand it anymore if we fail to reduce the movement of at least 20%,” Sadikin said.
