According to The Hollywood Reporter, renowned American filmmaker duo Anthony and Joe Russo are in early negotiations to helm the next two Marvel “Avengers” movies. After an extensive search for directors to oversee these highly anticipated films, the production company is finally close to finalizing their choice. Among the names considered was Shawn Levy, known for his work on “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
This potential hiring would mark a return for the Russo brothers, who have a long history with Marvel. They have directed several hit Marvel movies, including “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame.” Outside of the Marvel Universe, they are also known for their work on popular TV shows like “Arrested Development” and “Community.”
Over the past few years, Anthony and Joe Russo have established themselves as powerhouse producers in Hollywood with their company, AGBO. Their production credits include successful projects like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” the global spy series “Citadel,” and the action-packed “Extraction.” As directors, their recent work includes the crime drama “Cherry” (2021) and the thriller “The Gray Man” (2022). They have also been involved in the upcoming sci-fi adventure, “The Electric State.”
Initially titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” the next Avengers film was set to feature Jonathan Majors in a leading role. However, Majors was later cut from the project, reportedly due to allegations of assault and abuse. Marvel has yet to comment on this decision officially, but some speculate that an announcement might be made at the San Diego Comic-Con panel scheduled for next Saturday.
Looking ahead, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” is expected to feature a massive ensemble cast, bringing back over 60 characters, including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson. The fifth Avengers film is slated for release on May 21, 2026, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” set to follow on May 7, 2027.
