Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton, recently shared a humorous anecdote about a prank she played on her co-star Luke Newton, who portrays Colin Bridgerton in the series. In a joint interview with People, the pair discussed the amusing incident.
Coughlan revealed that she had discovered Luke’s past involvement in a boy band and devised an elaborate prank based on this tidbit. She recounted one of her favorite behind-the-scenes moments from the show, which took place during a ballroom scene.
Nicola recalled:
“We had a fun moment during one of the balls where Luke is supposed to interrupt a dance.”
Upon learning about Luke’s boy band history, Nicola immediately knew she wanted to incorporate it into a prank. She explained:
“I had always wanted to prank him by replacing the show’s music with his boy band’s song during his entrance, but it required an incredible amount of planning.”
Luke, who joined the conversation with People, shared his perspective on the prank. Nicola detailed her feelings during the setup:
“We knew exactly which take it would happen on, and the cameras were ready to capture his reaction. It was adorable because when you came onto the dance floor to interrupt the dance, we started dancing together, and your face was priceless.”
Luke admitted he sensed something unusual on set:
“It felt odd because there was a weird energy. People were glancing at me, and I wondered if they were nervous about my dance. But I was confident, thinking we’d get through it.”
He described his surprise when he heard the familiar tune:
“Then I heard it – at first, it was just a tick, tick, tick in my ear, and I thought it sounded like… Then it blasted through the speakers, and all the dancers reacted.”
Both actors agreed that this scene would always remind them of the playful joke. The first part of Bridgerton’s third season is currently streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 set to release on June 13.
