Today was first celebrated on July 18, 2010, after the United Nations in November 2009 officially stated Nelson Mandela’s international day. Initially, today is the idea of Mandela to celebrate her birthday as Mandela’s day. On his 90th birthday, Mandela said, “It’s time for a new hand to lift the burden. It’s in your hands now.” However, there are several groups that began celebrating today starting July 18, 2009.
In 2014, the UN General Assembly introduced Nelson Mandela’s prize, award that recognized their achievements that dedicated their lives with humanitarian services.
