American rapper Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, found himself in hot water over the weekend in Romania. The artist was prosecuted on charges related to illegal drug possession following an incident at a music festival. Wiz later took to social media to apologize to his fans.
The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutors, DIICOT, issued a press release detailing the charges. According to the statement, “[Khalifa] possessed over 18 grams of cannabis (risk drug) and consumed (onstage) another amount of cannabis under the shape of a craft cigarette” during a performance at a festival in Costinești, Constanța county.
The press release also emphasized the legal rights of those involved, stating, “We make it clear that, during the entire criminal process, the investigated persons benefit from the procedural rights and guarantees provided by the Code of Criminal Procedure and the presumption of innocence.”
Cannabis use for recreational purposes is prohibited in Romania, and Wiz Khalifa’s actions during his performance at the Beach! Please festival caught the attention of authorities. A video from the event showed the rapper being detained by prosecutors for illegal drug possession. Khalifa was taken into custody and questioned about his drug use, but he was released shortly afterward.
In response to the incident, Wiz Khalifa took to X to address his fans, posting a message that read, “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
This isn’t the first time Wiz Khalifa has made headlines for his cannabis use. Known for his open advocacy of the drug, both in his music and personal life, he previously attracted attention in early 2024 after discussing an incident on the Call Her Daddy podcast where he attended his son’s school event under the influence of cannabis.
While the rapper’s actions have sparked debate, it’s clear that Wiz Khalifa is hoping to make amends and return to Romania on better terms in the future.
