Bill Cobbs, the esteemed actor recognized for his roles in “Air Bud,” “Night at the Museum,” and numerous other film and television projects, has passed away at the age of 90.
Cobbs died peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, at his residence in Riverside, California, as confirmed by his brother, Thomas G. Cobbs. His publicist also stated that the cause of death was natural. Recalling Bill’s life, his brother described him as “a beloved partner, big brother, uncle, surrogate parent, godfather, and friend.”
Thomas G. Cobbs’ statement continued, “Bill recently and happily celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by cherished loved ones. As a family, we are comforted knowing Bill has found peace and eternal rest with his Heavenly Father. We ask for your prayers and encouragement during this time.”
Bill Cobbs began his acting career in 1974 with a minor role in the American crime drama film “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.” He went on to receive acclaim for his performances in films such as “The Hudsucker Proxy,” “The Bodyguard” as Whitney Houston’s manager, Martin Scorsese’s 1986 sports drama “The Color of Money,” “Demolition Man,” the coach in “Air Bud,” and the security guard in “Night at the Museum.”
In a 2023 interview, Cobbs reminisced about his debut film, saying, “All our friends and neighbors went to see the movie, and everyone was waiting for my appearance. I walk up to a policeman in the subway and say, ‘Hey, man. What’s goin’ on?’”
Bill Cobbs had a distinguished career, appearing in over 200 films, where he often took on supporting roles.

Born Wilbert Francisco Cobbs on June 16, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, Cobbs lived a full and impactful life. After high school, he served eight years in the US Air Force and later operated a car repair shop. It was while working at this shop in 1969 that a customer offered him a role in a theatrical production, sparking his acting career.
Reflecting on his craft, Cobbs once said in a 2003 interview, “To be an artist, you have to have a sense of giving. Art is somewhat of a prayer, isn’t it? We respond to what we see around us, what we feel, and how things affect us mentally and spiritually.”
