Netflix has decided to cancel the popular animated series My Dad The Bounty Hunter after its two-season run, despite the show’s acclaim and perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating. The series, created by Everett Downing Jr. and Patrick Harpin, debuted on February 9, 2023, with its second season following on August 17, 2023. The narrative centers on two children who, while stowing away on their father’s business trip, discover he is an intergalactic bounty hunter.
Despite its strong viewership and favorable reception, Netflix made the decision to quietly cancel the series, a fact confirmed by Everett Downing Jr. in an email to the media outlet What’s on Netflix. Downing Jr. expressed his gratitude, stating, “I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to work with such an incredible team of partners and artists. It’s so unreal watching your ideas come to life! Everyone who worked on the show fell in love with Terry, Tess, Lisa, Sean, and the entire cast of quirky, wild, and crazy characters. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to revisit this world again someday. For now, these characters and stories will be living rent-free in my heart for the rest of my life.”
The series not only received positive viewership but also made it to Netflix’s global top 10 list for English-language shows. After its first season, it was among Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series. Netflix’s own reports indicated that both seasons accumulated millions of viewing hours.
This cancellation follows a pattern seen with other kid-friendly or family-oriented originals on Netflix, such as Ada Twist, Scientist, Ridley Jones, Spirit Rangers, Oddballs, Maya and the Three, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
