American actress Julia Butters, known for her standout roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Fabelmans,” is rumored to be joining the cast of the highly anticipated sequel to “Freaky Friday” on Disney. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney confirmed the sequel last year and announced in March that Nisha Ganatra will direct the film.
While Disney has yet to officially confirm the cast, fans are hopeful that Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, stars of the original film, will reprise their roles. The excitement surrounding their potential return has been building since Curtis and Lohan expressed interest in a sequel during a 2023 interview with The New York Times. Curtis shared, “As I went around the world with ‘Halloween Ends,’ people wanted to know if there was going to be another ‘Freaky Friday.’ Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’”
Lohan echoed this sentiment, adding, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
Producer Andrew Gunn, who produced the original film, is set to return, alongside ex-Walt Disney Pictures executive Kristin Burr.
The duo of Curtis and Lohan celebrated on social media when Ganatra was chosen to direct the comedy, further fueling fans’ excitement. Curtis posted a photo with Lohan on Instagram, tagging Disney and adding to the anticipation.
The original “Freaky Friday,” released in August 2003, received critical acclaim and has since become a cult classic. The film grossed $160.8 million worldwide and was a remake of the 1977 movie starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. Directed by Gary Nelson, the fantasy-comedy was based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel of the same name.
With the possibility of Julia Butters joining the cast and the original stars potentially returning, the “Freaky Friday” sequel is shaping up to be a much-anticipated release for Disney fans.
