Jennifer Lopez, the renowned actress and singer, has recently joined the ongoing debate about artificial intelligence. She shared her thoughts on both the advantages and disadvantages of AI and recounted a personal experience where she fell victim to this technology.
In her latest film, Atlas, which premiered on Netflix on May 24, 2024, Lopez takes on the lead role of a data analyst. Directed by Brad Peyton, the movie follows her character as she turns to AI to save the world from a malevolent robot.
During the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, Lopez told Variety,
“This movie does a good job of showing how AI could go incredibly wrong, and this is how it could go really right. It’s really scary. Right away we had them stealing our faces. So, yes, [AI] is really scary. I think you should be respectful of AI…We have to be open to all possibilities. These movies that are talking about AI — especially this one — do a really good job of showing both sides.”
Lopez also reflected on feeling exploited when skincare advertisements used altered images of her, showing her with exaggerated wrinkles.
Atlas is a sci-fi film that features Lopez as Atlas Shepherd. The movie’s cast includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Mark Strong, Abraham Popoola, and Lana Parrilla.
According to the official logline,
“Atlas Shepherd (Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”
The film has received mixed reviews but has quickly climbed into Netflix’s top 10 most-watched movies over the Memorial Day weekend.
