This is a significant move, especially since Disney is known for its family-friendly content. The film, slated for release on July 26, marks Disney’s first venture into R-rated territory since acquiring Fox, which distributed the previous two R-rated Deadpool installments.
Fans of Deadpool had been concerned about the film’s future under Disney, fearing a shift towards a more sanitized version of their beloved anti-hero. However, their worries were laid to rest when Disney gave the green light to maintain the franchise’s trademark foul-mouthed humor.
On May 20, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy joined Fandango’s Jacqueline Coley to share some insights into their eagerly awaited film. Reynolds remarked,
I hope this doesn’t sound condescending, but I’m really proud of them for doing this. It’s a huge step for them. It adds a whole new color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is Disney and the different people they have been entertaining for forever. I was surprised they let us go as Hard R, but very grateful. I mean, there’s no other way to do it.
Reynolds emphasized that the intention was not to exploit the R-rating for its own sake but to embrace the creative freedom it affords. He reflected,
That was the most full-throated version of Wolverine or Logan that we’ve ever seen as well.
Director Shawn Levy echoed Reynolds’ sentiments, adding,
We made it clear from the beginning… If the three of us are going to take this on, we must stay true to the essence of a Deadpool movie. That means no toning things down; we’re going to be bold, humorous, and edgy.
