Renowned Hollywood actor Dabney Coleman, celebrated for his roles as mean-spirited and humorous villains and bosses, has passed away at the age of 92. Coleman, known for his performances in “9 to 5” and “Tootsie,” left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
His daughter, Quincy Coleman, confirmed the news of his passing. Coleman died on Thursday at his home in Santa Monica on May 16, 2024, at 1:50 p.m. Quincy shared a heartfelt statement with the media:
“My father navigated his time on Earth with an inquisitive mind, a kind heart, and a spirit brimming with passion, desire, and a sense of humor that delighted everyone. In his final days, he carried himself with grace, distinction, and mastery.”
Coleman, a Primetime Emmy Award winner, gained widespread acclaim for his role as an egotistical talk show host on NBC’s “Buffalo Bill” in 1983. The show, which ran for two seasons, followed the journey of its protagonist at a TV station in Buffalo, New York. Although beloved by critics, it only produced 26 episodes.
Coleman’s breakthrough came in 1980 with the cult classic “9 to 5,” where he portrayed a “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss. The film is regarded as one of the ‘100 Funniest American Movies of All Time.’ His portrayal of a sexist soap opera director, Ron Carlisle, in the 1982 film “Tootsie” further cemented his reputation.
Despite his fame for playing egotistical and villainous characters, Coleman showcased remarkable versatility throughout his career. The Golden Globe winner was married twice, and his second marriage to Jean Hale blessed him with four children.
