‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Steals the Limelight at the Cannes Film Festival

George Miller’s upcoming film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga received a warm welcome at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The movie, starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, earned a seven-minute standing ovation from the audience. It is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth’s highly anticipated film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga invigorated the Cannes Film Festival. George Miller’s film received a notably positive reaction at the event, marking it as the fifth installment in the franchise. The audience at the Grand Lumiere Theatre gave the film a standing ovation lasting over seven minutes.

Furiosa, produced by Warner Bros., is set for a theatrical release on May 24. The franchise’s last update was nine years ago with Mad Max: Fury Road, which featured Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

Hemsworth, the lead actor of the apocalyptic franchise, was visibly emotional at the event, while Taylor-Joy blew kisses to fans over the camera. Taylor-Joy plays the titular role, with Hemsworth portraying the warlord Dementus. The film’s synopsis provides insight into its origin story:

“Amidst a crumbling world, young Furiosa is abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a formidable biker horde under the command of the warlord Dementus. Roaming the desolate wasteland, they stumble upon the citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. These two tyrants clash in a battle for supremacy, while Furiosa faces numerous trials as she strives to uncover the path back to her home.”

In an interview with Deadline, Taylor-Joy shared,

“Due to the grueling shooting schedule, I frequently found myself alone. Furiosa, being an introspective and exceptionally quiet character, intensified the sense of isolation as everything around me seemed to emphasize it.”

Interestingly, the script for Furiosa was written long before Fury Road was released. Miller aimed to delve deeper into Furiosa’s character. Given the film’s reception at Cannes, it is expected to generate significant profits on its hefty $168 million budget. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released on May 24.
