As summer starts to fade and the weather cools down, one of the first things people start looking for is haunted spaces to explore. The chance to spot a ghost or feel a little thrill in fear can be too tempting!
These are the five most haunted places on Long Island and why their ghosts are such popular stories that are told in the area.
Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts Theater
If you’re eager for a real Phantom of the Opera, this theater may scratch that itch! A projectionist was tragically killed in an accident, and now employees say he never clocked out. This mysterious figure has been seen wandering the movie theater, and many employees claim that broken equipment will suddenly get fixed overnight when nobody’s there.
Southampton History Museum
If you’re ready to go to a museum that’s also a haunted landmark, it’s time to check out the Southampton History Museum! Made up of over a dozen historical buildings: two of which happen to be the most haunted spaces on Long Island.
The Rogers Mansion and the Halsey House are both said to have incredible amounts of activity. Guests and employees alike say they hear loud unexplainable footsteps, that they see items getting tossed around, beds suddenly end up messy and unmade, and that people have been followed by shadowy figures that tug their hair or skirts. Paranormal investigators now offer ghost tours here once a month throughout the year.
Fire Island Lighthouse
If you want to take a beach break after looking at Long Island houses for sale: you might notice Fire Island Lighthouse. The story of this lighthouse ghost is tragic, with accounts saying a child died of sudden illness, and the caretaker, distraught at the death of his child, took his own life. His ghost is said to roam the lonely rooms, and many say they can still see his figure operating the lighthouse.
Raynham Hall
Raynham Hall was built before the Revolutionary War, so it’s full to the brim of ghost stories it’s gathered through the years. One of the largest ones is that British Major John Andre, who was hanged for conspiracy during the Revolutionary War, can be spotted walking through the halls and sitting in rooms.
Another ghost that many claims to spot here is that of Sally Townsend, the owner’s daughter, who died of a broken heart after possibly receiving the nation’s first valentine. This is an imposing and large hall to explore if you have the guts to do so.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
A more classic haunting, the Old Bethpage Village Restoration is said to house the ghost of a young boy who was mysteriously locked up in one of the houses on the property. Strange carvings in the woodwork have appeared over time, and many report bizarre noises and sights in the area.
Long Island Has an Interestingly Spooky Side
If you’re interested in a walk on the scary side, consider visiting Long Island and going on a couple of ghost tours! There’s nothing as fun as some safe scares!
